SPAN Smart Panel Upgrade for Townhome EV Charging & Electrical Expansion

About this Project

Empire Power recently completed a residential electrical modernization project for a homeowner in a townhome community facing significant electrical limitations due to a shared utility infrastructure setup.

The customer’s residence was served by a small 100-amp subpanel connected to a shared main electrical service and metering arrangement within the community. The electrical system consisted of a shared electrical panel with separate utility meters for the customer and neighboring unit. Because the HOA/community maintained ownership of the primary electrical infrastructure, the customer was unable to pursue a traditional utility service upgrade despite needing additional electrical capacity for modern appliances and EV charging.

The homeowner wanted to install a Level 2 EV charger and add new kitchen appliances as part of a home modernization project, but the existing electrical system lacked both available amperage capacity and physical breaker space to support the additional loads safely.

After evaluating the site conditions and service limitations, Empire Power designed and installed a SPAN Smart Electrical Panel solution that allowed the customer to maximize the performance and flexibility of the existing electrical service without requiring a costly or impractical utility upgrade.

Scope of Work

  • Removed the existing undersized subpanel
  • Installed a new SPAN Smart Panel
  • Reconfigured and reorganized branch circuits
  • Created additional circuit capacity for future electrical expansion
  • Integrated intelligent load management technology
  • Prepared the system for EV charging and new kitchen appliance circuits
  • Completed system testing, commissioning, and smart app setup

Customer Benefits

The SPAN Smart Panel transformed the customer’s electrical system from a constrained and outdated setup into a modern, intelligent energy management solution.

Key benefits of the project included:

  • Avoided a Costly Service Upgrade
Because the community controlled the shared electrical infrastructure, upgrading utility service was not a realistic option. SPAN’s intelligent load management capabilities allowed the customer to safely add new electrical loads while staying within the limits of the existing service.
  • Enabled EV Charging Capability
The new system supports Level 2 EV charging by dynamically managing electrical demand throughout the home. SPAN can intelligently prioritize loads to prevent overload conditions while maximizing charging performance.
  • Expanded Electrical Capacity Without Increasing Service Size
Through real-time energy monitoring and smart circuit management, the customer gained significantly more usable flexibility from the existing 100-amp service
  • Additional Circuit Space for Future Upgrades
The new panel provided the customer with the breaker space needed for future kitchen appliances, home improvements, and continued electrification upgrades.
  • Real-Time Energy Monitoring & Smart Controls
Using the SPAN mobile app, the homeowner can monitor energy usage by individual circuit, manage loads remotely, and gain visibility into the home’s overall electrical consumption.
  • Improved Reliability & Modernization
Replacing the outdated subpanel with a modern SPAN Smart Panel improved overall electrical reliability, organization, and safety while future-proofing the home for evolving energy needs.
  • Ideal Solution for HOA & Shared-Service Communities
This project demonstrated how smart panel technology can solve electrical capacity challenges in multifamily and townhome environments where traditional service upgrades are difficult, restricted, or prohibitively expensive.

Overall, the project provided the customer with a practical and innovative solution that unlocked EV charging capability, expanded the home’s electrical functionality, and modernized the electrical system — all without requiring changes to the shared community electrical service.
