SPAN Smart Panel + EV Charging Upgrade

Empire Power recently completed a residential electrical modernization project featuring the installation of a new SPAN 32 Smart Electrical Panel and SPAN Drive Level 2 EV Charger for a homeowner with an existing 100-amp electrical service.

The customer wanted to add EV charging capabilities and improve overall electrical functionality without the significant cost and utility coordination required for a full service upgrade. After evaluating the home’s existing electrical demand, Empire Power designed a solution utilizing SPAN’s intelligent load management technology, allowing the customer to maximize the capability of their existing 100-amp service safely and efficiently.

Scope of Work

• Removed the existing outdated main electrical panel
• Installed a new SPAN 32 Smart Panel
• Installed a SPAN Drive Level 2 EV charger
• Reconfigured and labeled branch circuits
• Integrated smart energy monitoring and load management features
• Completed all wiring, testing, and commissioning of the system

The new SPAN Smart Panel provides the homeowner with significantly more control and visibility over their electrical system compared to a traditional panel.

Through the SPAN mobile app, the customer can:

• Prepare the home for future electrification upgrades

One of the biggest advantages of this project was the ability to install EV charging without upgrading the utility service. By leveraging SPAN’s smart load management capabilities, the system can dynamically balance electrical demand within the existing 100-amp service capacity. This avoided the cost and delays associated with a utility service upgrade while still allowing the customer to safely charge their electric vehicle at home.

The addition of the SPAN Drive charger also gives the homeowner a fully integrated EV charging solution designed to communicate directly with the smart panel, optimizing charging performance while protecting the home from overload conditions.

Overall, this project modernized the customer’s electrical infrastructure, expanded their capabilities for future energy needs, and delivered a smarter, more efficient electrical system without increasing their utility service size.
